In our last installment we explored how to initially approach your first attack. Always get the opinion of a professional. In this second part we will look at alternatives to manage your panic attacks on your own.
Things You Can Do Alone
Yes, you’ve no doubt heard it again and again, but you simply must BREATHE! Breathing is probably the single most important thing you can do ward off and control panic attacks. Introducing breathing exercises into a daily regimen helps you to deal with panic attacks, but also brings many other positive benefits into your life. Those who suffer from panic attacks have been found to breathe more shallowly than others, which can ultimately lead to restriction of connective and muscle tissue in the chest cavity. This can cause a decrease in range-of-motion in the chest wall, which can result in those bands of constriction many people describe while having a panic attack. When singers practice breathing exercises, they do it to increase control and air capacity, which decreases instances of having their voices break when they are singing. When you breathe properly, you increase your energy levels, both mentally and physically, and depression, which is a common cause of panic attacks, is often the precipitated by both physical and mental fatigue.
There are several lifestyle changes that you can make to help you with your management of panic attacks. If you will stop using drugs and alcohol, stop smoking, and be careful about how much caffeine you have, you will notice almost immediate results. (If, however, you need help with alcohol or drug abuse recovery, you should get professional help.) It may not be easy to give up cigarettes or your morning coffee, but keep reminding yourself that these things can trigger panic attacks, and that you can live without them in order to live without the attacks.
Find yourself a comfortable exercise routine to add to your panic attacks treatment plan – exercise releases endorphins into your body and those are the chemicals that make you feel good. It’s important to find the right kind of exercise for who you are – if you are typically a sedentary person, then you need to take care to start slow and do your stretches before starting to exercise. Tai Chi and Yoga are great substitutes for aerobics, if those are not really your style, and, if nothing else, take a daily walk. Maybe there’s someone at work who would like to walk with you during lunch or after quitting time. Exercising can be a lot easier when you’re not doing it alone. There is no wrong or right exercise to pick – just pick something that keeps you active so that you can keep from having panic attacks.
You will need to find ways to keep the stress levels down, as well. There are people who swear that meditating in the morning helps them have a good day, and that meditation before bed helps them sleep at night. Other folks swear by the benefits of a hot bath that soaks away their stress and tension. There are essential oils that are knowing for imparting tranquility and that you can add to your bath. You may have heard of lavender being used for this purpose, but don’t forget that ginger, lemon, orange blossom and vanilla all impart tranquility as well. Aromatherapy is not only for the bath; these days it is easy to find reed diffusers or even small electronics or inexpensive air fresheners that release serene scents into your environment.
