What do we know about the Beck Anxiety Inventory?
We use the Beck Anxiety Inventory to measure the severity of anxiety. It was brought to life by the very famous Aaron Temkin Beck, an American professor who has extensively focused on psychopathology, psychotherapy, suicide and psychotics. One of the most commonly used tools that measure and determine depression severity is this Beck Anxiety Inventory and Beck Depression Inventory, which has as base cognitive therapy.
There are 21 multiple choice “self-report inventory’ questions in the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) instrument. A particular kind of psychological test used by mental health professionals is a self-reporting inventory, whereby patients are not allowed to get help while filling out the questionnaire or test. The questionnaire includes questions on the patients’ behaviour, symptoms and anything that might show in their personality traits that they have a mental disorder or illness. These answers given by the patient are used by the Beck Anxiety Inventory to ascertain an accurate score.

The Beck Anxiety Inventory test contains 21 questions and its total score is 63. The patient has to answer to several questions such as how they’ve been feeling during the past week related to anxiety symptoms such as cold, hot sweats, numbness, feeling of fear and apprehesion, etc. Questions may vary, but the choice of answers is always the same for each question. The patient, proceeding from how they felt, chooses the most appropriate answer. “Not at all”, “mildly”, “moderately” and “severely” are all viable answers depending on how much the patient was bothered.
Patient symptoms are rated on a 4-point scale going from 0 to 3 and the ratings total is calculated in the total score. The maximum score a patient can have is 63. The BAI is read and given a score by the Beck Computer Scoring. The Beck Anxiety Inventory is extremely accurate at assessing panic symptoms and it is used for both adults as well as adolescents. The test has been used by adults, adolescents and elderly as well, yet women with the same anxiety disorders seem to score higher than man. Counting as one of the top 3 tools of its type, The Beck Anxiety Inventory is a common tool that determines and measures anxiety with precision.
The following is what the scores let us know about the patients.
0-7: Minimal level of anxiety.
8-15: Mild anxiety.
16-25: Med. level of anxiety.
26-63: Serious anxiety level.
The main reason for using the Beck Anxiety Inventory is to determine whether we are talking about anxiety or depression, to be able to determine the symptoms for each and which ones are related to anxiety. Depending on how the Beck Anxiety Inventory is administered, orally or self-administered, it can last up to 10 minutes or less. It works at its optimum if it’s used in clinical settings or in research.
