Social anxiety disorder, a lot more frequent and more serious than we think
Separation anxiety is actually very common in children under three, which is normal for toddlers and young children feel anxious when a parent leaves the room. It is also very common for young children to feel anxious and cry when left of center or a school for the first time. For most children, it finally passes as children move into new places and activities.
The problem occurs, however, in about 4% of children in this separation anxiety did not disappear and is therefore considered a disorder. Children with this type of disorder generally experience extreme anxiety when away from home and separated from the mother and father. This usually manifests as homesickness and even extreme poverty, and these children often have intense fears about health and safety of their parents.
Consequently, these children are often:
– Try to avoid going anywhere by themselves.
– Refusing to go to places like school or camp.
– Refuse to participate in dodo.
– Follow a parent all the time.
– Request that Mom or Dad can stay with them at bedtime, or are present in their parents' bedroom during the night.
– Doing nightmares of being separated from their families.
Closely related to the separation anxiety is social anxiety disorder, or "social phobia". This disorder involves a intense fear of social situations and performance, such as starting a conversation, the scene in front of others, speaking in class, participating in activities of peers, etc.
Consequently, children with social phobias tend to withdraw and avoid such activities, which greatly reduces the quality of their lives. It can also affect their performance and school attendance, and impair their ability to train the necessary skills and social relationships. Research has also shown that, if left untreated, children with disabilities anxiety are more vulnerable to addiction, depression and comorbidity (two disorders or conditions that occur together).
So what Parents should monitor and what should they do if they suspect a real phobia or disorder?
Part of the problem, of course, is that young Children are often shy, and even adults may have concerns about the scene in front of others. Signs to watch for include:
– Reluctance or discomfort being in the spotlight.
– Avoid eye contact.
– Speaking of a very calm voice or mumbling.
– Avoid conversations with their peers, do not invite friends to meet, never order food in restaurants.
– Being isolated groups, which do not participate in group activities.
– Being too concerned and affected by a negative evaluation or embarrassment.
– Fear of being invited into the classroom, reading aloud or speaking in public.
When put in these situations, children with Social anxiety disorder usually have symptoms such as:
– Heart Racing
– Perspiration
– Dizziness
– Stomach ache
– Crying
– Tantrums
For parents of young children, experts advise boards following to help children overcome or cope with social anxiety disorder:
– Do not talk to your child, but encourage the child to speak for his own food, etc.
– Encourage children to become involved in the birthday parties, play groups, activities school, family gatherings, games, activities, etc.
– The rewards and praise for children to speak, starting conversations, etc.
– Role Model on the desired social behavior.
For older children, as is the case with the mother and son which is far in school panic disorder, is a more intense form of social anxiety disorder. It is not very common in young children, but usually begins in adolescence and early to mid-twenties.
People with this disorder have panic attacks, which are sudden episodes of intense fear or discomfort, and generally include at least four of the following:
– Palpitations
– The sweating
– Aspen
– Hot flashes or chills
– Sensations of tingling
– The need for escape
– A sense of imminent danger or doom
– Shortness of breath / choking feeling
– Nausea or stomach
– Pain or chest discomfort
– Dizziness
– The fear of losing control or "going crazy"
If children or adults, had panic attacks, they generally avoid situations where they have had previous crises. When children and adults start avoiding public places (places from which it could be difficult), "agoraphobia" can develop, which severely hampers the participation normal in situations such as school, work and life.
The bad news is that, because the symptoms of these disorders often mimic conditions such as heart attacks, thyroid and respiratory problems, the disorder is often difficult to diagnose true. People who suffer from Panic attacks often make many trips to the doctor or emergency room.
The good news is that once the proper diagnosis, treatment may be very effective. Therapists often use a combination of cognitive and behavioral therapy called cognitive-behavioral (CBT) in which the patient is involved in his recovery, has a sense of control, and learn skills that are useful throughout life.
The Relaxation techniques – such as breathing retraining and exercise – are also used and helping people with anxiety disorders to cope more effectively. Medications, including some antidepressants and anxiolytics are often used in combination with the treatments mentioned above. And, of course, understanding and support of parents, family and friends can go a long way in helping people with anxiety disorders face and overcome.
