Why do we worry so much? There seems to be an endless string of bad news and plenty to worry about today. The terrorist’s attacks, missing children, global warming, bad economy, disease and crime. Many people today are chronic worriers, but certain people seem to be more prone to worry than others. There is some scientific evidence that there is a genetic component to chronic worriers.
What type of person worries more than others?
Worriers are often highly intelligent. They are able to see all of the things that can go wrong in a situation and effectively plan how to prevent them. There are many highly successful people who are excessive worriers.
People who are worriers are often very imaginative and creative. It takes someone with a vivid imagination to think of all of the many things that can go wrong. Its common for very intelligent children to worry more than others.
Is worrying a good thing or just a bad habit?
Everyone, including animals, feel fear because it is a natural part of life. It’s part of human nature and was created for our survival. Fear is a necessary part of life and is there to protect you; however, too much fear can do more harm than good.
Studies have shown that some anxiety before a tests or athletic performance can actually improve performance but only up to a point. Performance actually decreases when your anxiety reaches too high a level. The trick is to strike a balance between too much worrying and worry just enough to protect yourself from harm.
How do you know when you are worrying too much?
- Are you anxious and worried every day or more days than not?
- Do you worry at night and have trouble sleeping?
- Have you done poorly on a test in school because you were so nervous you find yourself forgetful?
- When in perfect health, do you still worry about health issues or fear death?
- Do you find it difficult to stop worrying once you start/?
- Do you get so nervous before a performance that your hands shake or you feel nauseous?
- Do you worry about money even when you are able to pay all of your bills?
- Do you often feel a sense of dread or that something bad is about to happen when there is no apparent cause for concern?
- Are you pessimistic and prone to believing things will go wrong?
- Do you tend to ruminate or go over the same negative thoughts in your mind and find it difficult or impossible to stop?
- Do your use alcohol or drugs to cope with worrying?
- Do you have a history of anxiety disorders in your family or have a close family member who worries excessively?
- Do you ever feel that your excessive worrying about something bad that could happen might actually help prevent it from happening?
