There IS Treatment for Panic Attacks – Part 2 of 2
Last installment we talked about several available affordable paid methods to treat panic attacks. The methods we discussed are the least “traditional” of the bunch. The second part of this report focuses on the professionally guided treatment schedules, some of them including medication.
Consider Cognitive Behavior Treatment
”CBT” (Cognitive Behavior Treatment) is not a prepackaged program like those above, but uses cognitive psychology to employ a psycho-therapeutic approach. It is a general term for a form of mental health treatment that is only available by seeing a psychiatrist or psychologist. This therapy type has the support of the psychology community as being one of the most effective therapies for mood disorders, including panic disorder, and can be applied in both group and individual settings. Your insurance may cover this treatment, and the cost can vary greatly depending on your provider, but an average session can run about $150.00.
A Description of Exposure Therapy
The Archives of General Psychiatry (in the June 2008 issue) described this treatment as being able to prevent acute stress disorder from becoming post traumatic stress syndrome, and Exposure Therapy is based on CBT, which is described in the above-section. This therapy, too, must be administered by a licensed professional, and introduces the patient to his or her fears in small doses so that they can overcome them. Just to give you an example, consider someone who is afraid of heights; while undergoing this type of therapy, the therapist will assist the patient in climbing to the top of a tall building, by doing it a couple of floors at a time. This type of therapy may also be covered by your insurance, and one session generally costs an average of $150.00.

Having been in use since ancient times, hypnotism is by no means a new form of therapy. Essentially, hypnotism is a form of guided meditation that forces the patient into a sort of trance where suggestions that stay in the subconscious of the patient after the session is over are introduced to the patient. There are those Vegas-type showmen who have given hypnotism a bad reputation by having people do silly things, supposedly while in a trance, but even though it can be a little hard to swallow because of this, hypnosis has benefited many people in its use as a treatment for panic attacks. Costs for hypnosis vary a great deal, costing anywhere from $100.00 on up, and it can actually sometime be covered by insurance.
Drug Therapy
There are four main categories of prescription drugs that are regularly prescribed for panic disorder. Tricyclic Antidepressants include drugs such as Tofranil, Anafranil, Pamelor, and Norpramin. A patient can expect to be on these medications for about six months, and should further expect them to start working after about a month. The second category includes brand named drugs like Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, and Luvox, which are Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). The efficacy of these drugs is very dependent on a patient’s genetics. The third category is made up of Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors, or MAOIs, and include drugs such as Nardil and Parnate. They are prescribed less frequently than SSRIs, because they interact badly with many other medications and some foods. The last category contains drugs such as Xanax, Ativan, and Klonopin, and is known as Benzodiazepines, and these are most often used for short-term treatment of anxiety.
While this article lays out the basics of some of today’s treatments for panic attacks, you should be aware that a complete treatment plan can include one or more of these methods. In addition to those above, there are many self-help therapies that should be incorporated as well. It can be advantageous to reduce your stress and anxiety by all means possible in order to have the perfect treatment for panic attacks.
