Self help for Panic with Dr Claire Weekes
In the area of anxiety, panic and nervous disorders, Dr Claire Weekes is a seriously respected and internationally renowned expert. Her books, audio tapes, and video are recommended by doctors and used in clinics all over the world. She has achieved distinction as the first woman Doctor of Science at the University of Sydney, and was acknowledged by Queen Elizabeth II for her contributions to medicine. She was twice nominate for a Nobel Peace Prize, in 1983 and 1990 and is hailed as one of the pioneers of self help in psychiatry.

Dr Weekes is no longer alive but her legacy is still considered as relevant as it was when she was alive. All of her work was based on three main points: her own experience as a sufferer of anxiety, her outstanding scientific knowledge and her observation of her own patients. She never tried to claim the credit for curing people but instead showed them how to cure themselves. It was her belief that nervous disorders occur when people are kept in a state of extreme sensitization for an extended period of time. Sometimes the condition is brought about by an event and sometimes it occurs bit by bit, especially if the sufferer is forced to live with unpleasant circumstances. Her techniques are designed to teach people how to get control over their state of mind.Not only that, but she gives you practical ways to deal with your feelings of fear and dread. Finally, she helps people to understand their physical symptoms and how they relate to their mental state.

Her treatment explains what nervous fatigue is and how to cope with it and all the strange and frightening symptoms, both physical and emotional, that it brings in its wake. Dr weekes also explains depression which in the context of panic disorders can be thought of as depletion. An analogy could be someone turning over a car engine, fuelled by adrenaline, until the battery goes dead. Dr weekes will tell you how to recharge the battery. One of her qualities is that she is extremely good at reassuring her patients that they are not the only ones experiencing these symptoms and that there is in fact nothing seriously wrong with them.
