Reviewing A Panic Disorder
“I was driving home after work,” a panic disorder sufferer name David reported. “Things had been very stressful there lately. I was tense but looking forward to getting home and relaxing. And then, all of a sudden—boom! My heart started racing, and I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I was sweating and shaking. My thoughts were racing, and I was afraid that I was going crazy or having a heart attack. I pulled over and called my wife to take me to the emergency room.” The doctors couldn’t find any physical root for his anxiety, but nevertheless, a panic attack disorder can be extremely debilitating for sufferers if left untreated.
While the forces that cause panic attacks remain largely mysterious, researchers say that all panic attacks are triggered by known events, even if the patient is unaware of them. They also believe that a panic attack is a misfiring of the fight-or-flight response. Some feel treating this misfiring with antidepressant or sedative drugs is a good treatment, while others believe that gradual exposure to the internal and external triggers over time will help a person in overcoming panic attacks and avoiding a full-blown, debilitating panic disorder.
There are several other intriguing statistics to consider. First, women are twice as likely to develop panic attack anxiety as men. Two additional studies found that identical twins are more likely to both suffer from panic attack disorder, whereas fraternal twins are not. These studies suggest that there may, in fact, be biological ties to panic, although the genetic markers have yet to be identified. Whether it’s a cause or effect is not clear, but 50 to 60% of those who suffer from panic attacks also suffer from depression; 45% of panic attack patients were victims of sexual abuse; 35% of sufferers have alcohol or substance abuse problems; and 26% of patients have incapacitating agoraphobia, which is a fear of public places.
Regardless of the panic disorder causes, sufferers should learn how to perform diaphragmatic or abdominal breathing, which brings more oxygen into the blood stream and helps regulate heart rate. The patient may also retrain his or her way of thinking for a new outlook and treatment of the disorder. Instead of fretting over “what if” scenarios, it’s best to focus on absorbing the here and now. While acknowledging the anxiety attack, the best way to stop panic is to remind oneself, “No one has ever died from a panic attack,” “This feeling will pass and things will get better,” or “I can be anxious and still deal with this.”
