Panic Attacks When Sleeping
Panic attacks while sleeping are common for some people. They are usually the result of a source of anxiety in the daily life, even though it seems like they have no cause. Whether it is ongoing stress, or a trauma or stressful event, there is most probably a route cause to sleep panic attacks. If the occurrence of sleep panic attacks becomes regular and often, a person may develop additional problems. The person can start to fear going to bed and sleeping, which may lead to insomnia. The sleep routine could already have been sent out of balance due to the sleep panic attacks. This can increase the chance of panic attacks more as the person becomes more tired and stressed about the whole thing.
There is no physical danger in a sleep panic attack and it is important t remind yourself of this if it happens to you. It is strange and disorientating when you wake up in the middle of a panic attack. Just remember you cannot come to any harm. Secondly, treat the attack the same way as a panic attack while awake and calm yourself down using deep breathing and relaxation. The feeling of paralysis can sometimes occur in people as they are still half asleep but it is nothing to worry about. As your body goes into REM sleep, it is natural for your main muscle groups to become completely inactive, as the body repairs these muscles. To put a stop to panic attacks while sleeping, you must address the cause, as is the case with any form of panic attacks. The risk of a panic attack happening can be reduced with some immediate actions. In the evening, take on some light exercise and then make sure you stretch after. Stretching out the legs before sleep is a good technique to relax the body and mind for a good sleep.
