Panic Attacks Treatment Considerations – Part 1 of 2

No matter what you do next, the first time you have a panic attack, you should get professional help. There is no way of knowing whether your panic attack is an isolated event, or whether it is the start of a frightening cycle of continuing attacks. Your attack may have been triggered by a life-changing event (such as losing a loved-one or a job, or having to fly for the first time), or it could have been brought on by an unknown trigger. Either way, it is extremely important to have a professional evaluate whether or not it was a real panic attack in and of itself, or if it was the manifestation of another condition. This is something that you cannot do by yourself.

It is time to get help when your attacks become so severe that they interfere with your ability to live a normal life. If you have had no success by trying several remedies by yourself, then this is even more important. If you feel that your condition is causing you to become agoraphobic, and when you have stopped doing thing you should be able to do, like driving to work, it’s time to high-tail it to the doctor.

If you don’t seek to treat your attacks, be aware they can go on to cause depression and phobias, and even heart disease. People who don’t seek treatment for panic attacks have a much higher suicide rate. Seek medical intervention immediately if you feel yourself slipping farther and farther into depression, or if you start to have thoughts of suicide.

If you have started self-medicating with drugs or alcohol to relieve your panic attacks, consider seeking assistance from a professional. You are doing nothing but feeding the attacks by doing this, as these things are literally panic attack triggers. If you believe that alcohol are drugs are your only option, you need to get on the road to recovery by seeing your health care professional post haste.

In instances where there is a specific and known trigger for your panic attacks, such as fear of heights, fear of flying, or fear of water, there are therapies in use called Exposure Therapy. This is where you actually learn to face the thing that frightens you, but it must be done one step at a time, and it must be done with a professional coach. This type of therapy can have very negative outcomes if done too fast, and will have no positive benefit if done too slowly.
