Panic Attacks Children: Know the Signs
Panic attacks can affect people of all ages. Children of any age are not immune. Panic disorder is common and very treatable, even in children. The sooner you see the symptoms and get help, the easier time you will have treating this condition. Since children and adolescents often don’t understand what is happening with them, it’s your job as a parent or caregiver to keep an eye on them and try to recognize the signs of panic and panic attack.
Children with panic disorder will have sudden and unexpected periods of intense fear and discomfort. Shortness of breath and racing heartbeat are other symptoms that can come with this. Often these panic attacks will come without a reasonable known cause for the fear or the symptoms will remain longer than normal after a fearful event has occurred.
These times can last from minutes to hours and this is what we call panic attacks. They can come on very quickly with no warning. Other symptoms may include intense fearfulness, a feeling that something terrible is going to happen, racing or pounding heartbeat, dizziness or lightheadedness, trembling or shaking, sense of unreality, fear of dying, fear of losing your mind, fear of losing control and more.
There are over 3 million Americans who suffer from panic disorder at some point in their lives so it’s no surprise that some of these people are children. If not recognized and treated, panic disorder can be devastating to a person. It can greatly affect their life and their future when this happens in a child. It can affect their relationships, school work, growth and development and mood and personality.
They might feel anxious all the time, even if they’re not having a panic attack. They may be fearful of people or places and withdrawn from certain situations. They will try to avoid situations that they think will cause them panic. Sometimes they fight to avoid separation from parents or going to school. Children with panic disorder are prone to self medicate with alcohol or drugs.
Often panic disorder can be difficult to diagnose in children. Parents may take children to the doctor repeatedly as the physician tries to determine the cause of physical symptoms, only to find there is nothing physically wrong.
Some parents don’t even make it as far as taking their child to the doctor for panic. They may think the child is just trying to get attention or that the fears are irrational and childish. This leads to early symptoms of a childhood panic and anxiety being completely ignored. Unfortunately, this is why many children suffer alone with the condition which is completely treatable.
There are specific medications believed to be helpful with panic attacks in children as well as behavioral therapy, family therapy and self-help techniques that can be taught. A child with panic attacks can learn to deal with these symptoms at a young age so they do not have to suffer with them as an adult.
