Overcoming Commitment Anxiety
Anxiety – Do you want to overcome your social phobia?
If fear of rejection led you to get away from people, especially groups, there are several specific things you can do.
First, you must create a sense of your own value. In addition to this, cognitive-behavioral offers three types of interventions:
• Social skills training
• Noted exposure to social situations
• Cognitive-behavioral group therapy
Training social skills may be appropriate if you feel at a loss about how to converse with people in small groups or large. You can acquire skills to start and maintain conversations, the development of other people, listening, maintaining eye contact, and reach the revelation of self in the role play of these skills with a family member or therapist.
You can also role play activities more specific such as interviewing for a job, using conversation at a party, or ask someone on a date. Once you gain confidence in these skills with a supportive friend or a therapist, you can begin to try them in real life.
Graded exposure to social situations is to implement a series of special activities that you undertake to do either with a therapist or on your own. Series activities are organized in a hierarchy "from easiest to most difficult. A typical hierarchy might look like this:
CONVERSATIONS OPEN:
1. Call two stores to ask if something is in stock.
2. Call a hotline counseling and talk about yourself.
3. Attend a small meeting and say your name.
4. Attend a small meeting and make two observations.
5. Repeat 3 and 4 with a small group of friends.
6. Attend a social event and stay for twenty minutes.
7. Same as 6, but remain one hour to respond when others talk about you.
8. Same as 7, but you commit at least two conversations.
9. Initiate conversations with people waiting in line that you do not know.
10. Go to someone in a mall and make conversation.
You can also build a hierarchy for a specific type of behavior, breaking down into a series of steps. For example, in learning to ask someone for a date, you can practice with individuals listed by a dating service before try walking to someone at a party.
