Is There Help for Panic Attacks? – Part 2 of 3

Last installment we talked about how diet, excercise and breathing excercises can help in managing panic attacks.  In this part we will talk about other ways in which we can deal with uncontrolable anxiety.

4. Engage in Meditation. Some folks may brush meditation off as new-age psycho-babble, but it has been in existence since ancient times with some reports saying it has been in use for over 5,000 years. You can learn to meditate for free, without having any prior experience , plus you can do it anywhere you are and at any time of day or night. (Can all those Buddhist monks be wrong?) Meditation has as its goal achieving tranquility and peace by taking your thoughts out of where you are at the moment. Different religions have different methods of meditation, and these include Taoism, Buddhism, Hinduism, and even Christianity. There are techniques that call for certain postures or positions, but really, how you meditate is up to you. Clearing your mind and focusing only on one thing is the goal. Okay, so maybe you’ve lain in bed trying to push away a rush of thoughts in order to get to sleep and you’re saying that this might not be so easy to do. Research to find the most comfortable form of meditation for you, then set aside some time to do it every day. Youll get good at this, and when you do, you can start to bring your safe place into your meditations, and once you have mastered doing both together, you can use them to lessen the severity of a panic attack, and maybe even to stop it altogether.

5. Keep a journal. Logging the frequency and intensity of each panic attack you experience can help you to pinpoint the triggers that you may never even have known affect you. Keeping a log of your panic attack experiences, either on paper or electronically, can help you to uncover the reasons that you may be having them, and writing is also very cathartic.

Professional Help

When you first start to have panic attacks, it is always a good idea to seek professional help. This is because there are many organic or medical conditions that can cause panic attacks. People who have post traumatic stress syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder, Wilsons disease, or hypoglycemia are all prone to panic attacks; and once the illness is treated, the panic attacks will subside as well. A lack of Vitamin B can be the culprit, too, and you need to know if there is a physical reason for the attacks before you start treating the panic attacks themselves.

You might also need the help of a mental health professional to find out the source of the attacks, and to recommend ways that you can deal with them, particularly if doing so is something you are having trouble with on your own. There is a common belief out there that while a psychologist will try to talk through the problem with you, a psychiatrist may want to prescribe medication for you. Be sure to tell your health care provider if you are opposed to taking medications. It can be quite revealing to see how he or she reacts to your request. Dont allow yourself to be talked into taking a prescription for medications you dont want, and be careful to ask about potential side-effects, as they can be as horrible, or worse, than the attacks can be.

Even so, there are many people who only have good results from meds , but they will tell you that it most likely took a little playing around with different meds, and different dosages of the same meds, before they found the magic combination. Most often prescribed for panic disorder are drugs such as Effexor, Prozac, Xanax, and Valium. You must remember to take your medications the way it was intended and the way your doctor prescribed it for you, and you must never, ever stop taking it without your doctor being involved in that process. Stopping your medication cold-turkey can result in serious injury, and many of these drugs have an increased possibility of relapse. Finally, never, ever take medication that has been prescribed for someone else. This is one of most dangerous things you can do, and it can cause you to die.
